Clara, a Breton (a small European gundog breed), from southern Spain, was the victim of severe abuse. She was removed from her hunter by the Guardia Civil after years of abuse. Clara had lost an eye—the hunter would not explain how it happened—and she had numerous other injuries. Thankfully, her physical wounds have healed, although the scars remain.

Despite enduring four years of abuse and neglect, Clara arrived in foster care in the UK full of happiness and with an incredible zest for life.

Today, Clara has been adopted by a wonderful couple on the Hampshire coast who absolutely adore her. She enjoys long walks by the sea, holidays in the Peak District, and the safe, loving life she always deserved.

Without an exemption in Secondary Legislation, rescue dogs like Clara—whose injuries are the result of abuse rather than cosmetic mutilation—will be refused entry to the UK. That would deny many dogs the chance of the happy ending that Clara has found.

We believe the law should target those responsible for abuse and illegal mutilations, not the innocent dogs who have already suffered.
